I'm so excited to share highlights from this amazing destination wedding in Portugal! A little back-story...
“I love this song!” She cranked up the radio and began to sing it out: “‘Cause I’m on top of the world, ‘ay! I’m on top of the world, ‘ay! Waiting on this for a while now, paying my dues to the dirt…I’ve been waiting to smile, ‘ay, been holding it in for a while, ‘ay, Take you with me if I can, been dreaming of this since a child! I’m on top of the world!”
That’s when I learned that this Imagine Dragons song was a big part of the wedding theme, as we winded through back roads outside Lisbon, Portugal on our way to the centuries old church where Joana and Ricardo would say their vows the next day. She said it really meant a lot to her and Ricardo, and it explained how they felt right now. Having all their friends and family come for the wedding weekend, celebrating and being in love… yeah, it’s like being on top of the world! I definitely understood. And I definitely felt like I was up there with her, capturing that view from the top in every way I could!
I met Joana the year before at another event in Portugal. Over late night cuisine in the streets of Porto, we talked about her relationship with Ricardo. How they met, their story… and I didn’t know then I would have the honor of documenting such an amazing moment in that story! I also didn’t know I would be 7 weeks pregnant when I did it! Or even that I would literally spend all day and into the night having the best time with them, soaking up a different way of life and celebrating. I think we could learn a lot from the way they do things for Portugal weddings. When a wedding includes cocktail hour, then lunch, an amazing dinner, and an after party- it’s a party! It’s a celebration of life and love and everything beautiful! I’m so thankful to know this couple and to have served them as their wedding photographer in Portugal!
The beautiful Basilica Santa Quiteria de Meca was the site for the ceremony, followed by a rocking reception at Quinta Gonçalo winery. The bride prepared at MYRIAD by Sana hotel in Lisbon. Thanks to my talented friend and colleague, Jaimie Woodruff, for her help in covering this entire day - and crazy night - of fun.
